So after a couple of months of going back and forth about lining the back of my bookshelves with wallpaper or wrapping paper, I finally decided to go for it yesterday and it took all of about 15 minutes and $17.00. I found sheets of the perfect matte wrapping paper at Paper Source for $4.50/sheet and just stuck them on the back of my bookshelves with double stick tape. Luckily the sheets were very large so there are only a couple of seams which I lined up with the shelves so they are not visible.
The lighting is poor in these pictures but this is a picture of the shelves before, white beadboard backing:
These are the after pictures with soft blue paper it really gives the shelves some depth! A quick inexpensive fix:
